About me

At College of Education, formerly known as a Teacher Training College, I studied French & Linguistics together with educational theory and a range of subsidiary “academic” subjects for 3 years, passing the Certificate in Education. This qualified me to teach and I taught in secondary schools for 29 years, being, at one time or another, Head of French department and Head of Year, teaching mainly French. As is often the case in UK schools, I also taught a variety of other subjects including German and Spanish. I also taught Spanish to adults in evening classes for several years.
Before taking up my first post and for a couple of the following summers I worked in a French Colonie d'Adolescents in order to further improve my spoken French and knowledge of the country and its customs.

Since taking early retirement from teaching, I have worked as a fencing coach and, after additional study and qualifications – Diploma in French (first degree level) and Diploma in Translation, (post-graduate level) [see full CV for details] - began translation as a freelance in 1998.

In 1976, having missed out on going to university, I embarked on an Open University degree course. There being yet no language courses available, I chose to further my interest in matters technical, mechanical and scientific including a technology course and geology. After 3 years I gained a BA degree. That has assisted me in being able to cope with technical matters in my translation work.

As will be seen from the list on the home page, my work has included a number of high profile, internationally renowned companies as clients. It has also included translations of documents relating to a number of north and central African governments, including contracts for very large scale projects.

You will note that I also work as a fencing coach, being a Level 3 coach in all 3 fencing weapons and a Coach Tutor, running courses to educate other coaches and would-be coaches. I am also still a competitive fencer and won both the World & European Veterans championships (Sabre 60+) in 2003, won World Bronze in 2008 and Sabre 70+ European Gold and World Bronze in 2015. Fencing is only one of my many sporting interests and I have recently taken up badminton again, being also a keen skier. I have participated competitively in football, hockey, rowing, cricket and squash, as well as badminton and fencing, in which latter I continue to compete nationally and at international level in Veterans events, with some success.
I am, therefore, well qualified to translate documents on sporting matters.

Should your interest in fencing be kindled then please see my fencing web site for more details of the sport and how to take it up.
